DistrictFile ‘Social Diplomacy’ Reception at the Embassy of Canada is a Success!

November 12, 2009

On Tuesday, November 10th more than 250 political, government and media professionals gathered at the Embassy of Canada to celebrate the launch of DistrictFile 2.0. Guests crowed into an overflowing room looking out at Capitol to hear Peter Mirijanian disccus the conclusion of DistrictFile’s recent ‘Beta’ test and its plan to unveil a new platform for the invitation-only social networking website next week.

Both Embassy of Canada Research Director Dan Abele and Peter spoke about the importance of Gov 2.0 and the role that DistrictFile will play in connecting people in politics. The new platform will support DistrictFile’s growing membership and incorporate many new features including an online magazine, a city guide, events calendar and social planner for member events.

The bipartisan crowd was diverse by Washington standards with representatives of the both RNC/DNC, the House and Senate, federal agencies including the SEC, DOJ, Commerce and Labor, media professionals, as well as many lobbying, public relations and consulting firms taking part in the celebration.

Power, Money & Politics

Rich in power, rich in money, rich in love. Wouldn’t that be just the ideal recipe for some people’s perfect world? According to the Hill focused publication Roll Call, we know 50 who are rich in power and rich in money, all though we don’t know for sure if they are rich in love (we can always hope).

Find your idol, hero, or next crush on Roll Call’s 50 Richest Members of Congress (Thank you MediaBistro FishBowlDC!)

Speaking of politics (I mean, this is DC. I can’t escape it I try to-and this is about a social networking site!.), the exclusive, invitation-only, bipartisan social network for political pro’s, DistrictFile, just appointed two key strategists to its Board of Directors. Amir Oveissi, founder of the social networking site, announced bringing on Jason Roe and Peter Mirijanian yesterday, September 14th.

Roe, with 20 years of campaign and public policy experience, had previously launched Federal Strategy Group, a government affairs firm and more recently founded Revolvis Consulting, a campaign consulting firm. He takes on the position as Chief Operating Officer.

Mirijanian joins DistrictFile as a Senior Advisor and communications consultant. Also with 20 years of industry experience under his belt, Mirijanian is a veteran of four Democratic presidential campaigns and the founder of Peter Mirijanian Public Relations, whose high-profile client list includes Verizon Wireless and Overstock.com. 090903_peter-mirijanian_click_pa_focusIf it’s a day of the week that ends with a “y,” you can most likely find Democratic strategist Peter Mirijanian, 46, holding court at Morton’s with his trademark cigar.

Part public relations expert, part lobbyist, Mirijanian functions as an advocacy consultant for the clients of his firm, Peter Mirijanian Public Relations, which he founded in 2000. Its client roster includes corporate giants Verizon and Overstock.com.

A loud and happy socializer, Mirijanian begins his day — and sometimes his work — when the clock strikes 5. Little wonder that he’s a Frank Sinatra aficionado. Known for his charismatic wit and well-rooted connections to both Capitol Hill and K Street, he is adept at landing top-notch media coverage for his clients. He credits part of his success on working directly with reporters, producers and speechwriters himself, rather than delegating the busy work to underlings. An early supporter of President Barack Obama, he’s also got strong connections to the administration and Democratic Party.

After graduating in 1985 from Drew University, he obtained a master’s degree from Georgetown University’s public policy school. He took an internship with Sen. Ted Kennedy’s press office soon after, a job Mirijanian calls “a dream come true.”

While on the job, he was mentored by now-Democratic strategist Steve McMahon, among others. He was also the protégé of top Democratic lobbyist Tony Podesta while working as Northeast regional manager for People for the American Way. After working on the national advance staffs of several presidential campaigns, including Mike Dukakis in 1988, two Clinton bids and Vice President Al Gore’s 2000 campaign, he launched Dutko World Wide’s public relations hub.

Born of Armenian heritage, Mirijanian is from New York. Mirijanian and his wife, Irina, a website producer and programmer, have a 10-month-old son named Tigran. The family resides in Georgetown.

DistrictFile Appoints Key Democratic and Republican Strategists to Board of Directors

September 14, 2009

Exclusive, invitation-only, bipartisan social network for political professionals steps up its game, bringing aboard experienced politicos for the launch of a new platform to support its rapidly growing membership this fall

09.14.2009 – Washington, D.C. – Amir Oveissi, founder of DistrictFile, the premier social networking website connecting people in politics, announced today the appointment of Jason Roe and Peter Mirijanian to its Board of Directors.

Mr. Roe who launched Federal Strategy Group, a government affairs firm with 17 offices in 11 states, and recently founded Revolvis Consulting, a campaign consulting firm, will join DistrictFile as Chief Operating Officer.

Roe brings nearly 20 years of experience on campaigns and public policy at the federal, state and local levels. He has served as chief of staff to Congressman Tom Feeney (FL), campaign manager for Congressmen Peter Roskam (IL) and James Rogan (CA), and as deputy campaign manager of Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign. He has also been active in international politics and democracy building, advising and overseeing elections in Liberia, Iraq, Nigeria and Bulgaria.

Mr. Roe has been recognized as a “Rising Star” by Campaigns and Elections Magazine and named to The Hill newspaper’s list of the “35 Under 35” most effective staffers on Capitol Hill.

“I have worked closely with Jason and his list of accomplishments speaks for itself. He has proven time and again throughout his career that he has the necessary leadership and vision to be successful in many different roles – whether it’s as a campaign manager, chief of staff or an executive, said Congressman Peter Roskam. “I am confident that he will make a great addition to the DistrictFile team.”

Mr. Mirijanian joins DistrictFile as a Senior Advisor and communications consultant. He is a veteran of four Democratic presidential campaigns and is the founder of Peter Mirijanian Public Relations, whose client list includes Verizon Wireless, PhRMA and Overstock.com.

Mirijanian’s communications experience spans more than two decades, beginning his career as a press aide in the office of Senator Edward M. Kennedy in 1984. Prior to starting his firm, he served as Vice President of the DCS Group, was a senior counselor at Powell Tate and led non-profit media campaigns at Fenton Communications.

Peter is a regular Democratic strategist and crisis communications commentator in national publications, for NBC’s Today Show, MSNBC (including Hardball with Chris Matthews), and The FOX News Channel.

“I am eager to work with Jason and Peter and excited about the months ahead. They have both been on the ground floor of successful ventures and will bring valuable experience with them,” said Oveissi.

“DistrictFile’s membership spans the globe and is not limited to any one political party, so it was important for us to recognize that fact and strike the right balance on our leadership team – I think we have achieved that.”

The announcement was made at the conclusion of a full week of Gov 2.0 conferences, bringing together policy and decision-makers from all levels of government, information technology industry and non-profits, as leaders inside and outside government are turning to the principles of participation, collaboration, transparency, and efficiency to address the challenges facing our country and the world.

Districtfile sponsored CongressCamp, a two day social media conference, and participated in the three day Gov 2.0 Summit held by O’Reilly Media in Washington, D.C this past week.

Techies meet with Feds to hash out Gov 2.0

By Kim Hart - 09/10/09 06:05 AM ET

Techies meet in Washington this week to ponder iPhone-like apps for government computer systems.

This week, a couple hundred federal officials, software developers and even a few investors are meeting to hash out ways techie engineers — as well as ordinary citizens — can help government systems run more efficiently.

It’s a movement called Gov 2.0, playing off the Web 2.0 term to describe interactive websites. Tim O’Reilly, who helped coin both phrases, organized the gathering, which is being held at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center and has ginned up significant buzz.

O’Reilly is best known for writing a popular series of computer books and hosting technology conferences. He’s now spending more time in Washington, talking with lawmakers about how to leverage Facebook, YouTube and Twitter. He’s also trying to get agencies to open up raw public data that developers can build online and mobile applications around — a concept Vivek Kundra, federal chief technology officer, has pioneered in the Office of Management and Budget.

“People have this idea that the government has all these resources, but most of those resources are already spoken for,” O’Reilly said Wednesday between company demonstrations. “We need people with tech skills to come to Washington, identify big challenges and show us what’s possible.”

Gov 2.0 has a few definitions. Some say it’s about making the government more transparent; others claim it’s about using social media to reach constituents.

O’Reilly — along with his friends at Google, Facebook and Amazon, to name a few — says it’s more about letting tech mavens build tools for the government; similar to how Apple built the iPhone and let software developers create applications for it, the government should offer its own array of citizen-produced applications.

Kundra will be at the conference on Thursday morning, talking about just that. That afternoon, Federal Communications Commission Chairman Julius Genachowski will talk about his plans to build out broadband services so citizens can more easily participate in Gov 2.0.

Getting more lawmakers on the social media bandwagon is also important, said O’Reilly, who points to Rep. John Culberson (R-Texas) as a model, even though he doesn’t “necessarily agree with his politics.” Culberson is the co-founder of the Republican New Media Caucus.

Speaking of social media, another gathering called CongressCamp is happening this weekend. It aims to bring staffers together to brainstorm ways to take advantage of social media, as well as how to avoid its pitfalls. (You mean I shouldn’t put those photos of the senator at happy hour on Facebook?)

The two-day event is sold out, but enterprising staffers can surely talk their way in.

Coming Soon: DistrictFile 2.0

August 7, 2009

Stay tuned for the latest updates on the launch of DistrictFile 2.0…

Dynamic New Site Has “Social” Profiles & Interactive Features

07.26.2009 – With the launch of National Journal’s new social networking directory of Congressional staff, there are inevitable comparisons to DistrictFile. However, there are notable distinctions between the two organizations. Founded in September, 2008, DistrictFile members include not only hill staffers and Members of Congress, but also also senior operatives from state and federal governments, campaigns, lobbying shops, media, think tanks, World Bank, Wall Street, and even the EU Parliament. DistrictFile has members from all over the country, and almost 30% of its roster is international. “I envision DF to be the U.N. of social networking,” says international financier and DistrictFile founder Amir Oveissi.

Membership in DistrictFile is invitation-only and highly selective. Even with a policy of slow, controlled expansion, the network has outgrown the current website. To accommodate the traffic, Oveissi has commissioned a dynamic new web interface that will launch later this year. He says, “I want to keep the details under wraps for now, but I’ll tell you there will be revamped “social” profiles and fun, innovative features to foster interaction among the members. Members of the media will be given a sneak preview before the official release.

DistrictFile is known for sponsoring intimate networking parties, cultural outings, and interesting speakers. Events are designed to foster high level, one-on-one relationship building, and the online network provides an easy mechanism for following and keeping up with your new contacts. In addition, the site also hosts a blog, an online magazine, a city guide and events calendar, and a social planner for member “meet-ups” all over the world. “DistrictFile allows for online collaboration while encouraging real life social interaction,” says Oveissi.

If you are interested in DistrictFile membership, reach out to your colleagues or attend one of our upcoming events. You can add yourself to the invitation list by joining our Facebook Fan page ‘Facebook.com/districtfile’ or following us at ‘Twitter.com/districtfile.’
